Description

Experience the glow-boosting power of Vitamin C without the irritation. Formulate your cosmetics with Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP)—a highly stable, gentle derivative of Vitamin C—this daily treatment illuminates dull skin, protects against environmental stressors, and helps keep breakouts at bay. Unlike traditional Vitamin C serums that can sting or quickly oxidize, this barrier-friendly formula stays fresh and effective from the first drop to the last, delivering a visibly radiant, even-toned complexion.

INCI Name: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Appearance: White to pale yellow/beige crystalline powder.

Usage Rate: 0.2% to 2% for daily antioxidant protection; 3% to 5% for targeted brightening and anti-acne formulations.

Solubility: Highly soluble in water. Insoluble in oils.

pH Stability: Unlike L-Ascorbic Acid which requires a highly acidic environment, SAP is most stable at a final pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

Superior Stability: Resists oxidation and heat degradation on the production line and in the final packaging, ensuring a reliable, long-lasting product.

Acne-Care Powerhouse: Highly effective in acne-control formulations. It pairs exceptionally well with salicylic acid and niacinamide to create comprehensive, multi-action clarifying serums without causing severe irritation.

Easy Incorporation: Fully water-soluble and easy to integrate into cold-process manufacturing or the cool-down phase of emulsions.

In Which Cosmetics is it Used?

While Vitamin C is traditionally a temperamental ingredient, SAP's chemical structure allows it to be used across multiple product categories:

Aqueous Serums: This is the most popular format. SAP creates excellent, lightweight, clear serums for daily brightening and antioxidant protection.

Anti-Acne Treatments: Because SAP has documented antimicrobial properties against P. acnes bacteria at concentrations of 5%, it is frequently used in acne-clearing gels and spot treatments.

Emulsions (Creams & Lotions): Used in anti-aging and daily moisturizers to boost collagen production and protect against environmental damage.

Cleansers and Face Washes: Unlike some actives that are completely wasted in wash-off products, SAP is occasionally used in high-end facial cleansers for its immediate antioxidant benefits, and because it can tolerate the slightly higher pH profiles often found in cleansing systems.

How is it Added to a Formulation?

Working with SAP requires specific attention to temperature and pH to ensure it remains stable and active in the final product.

1. Solubility & Phase

Water-Soluble: SAP is highly soluble in water and completely insoluble in oils.

Addition Phase: It should be pre-dissolved in a small amount of soapatopia's Demineralised water and added during the cool-down phase of your manufacturing process.

2. Temperature Sensitivity

While far more stable than pure L-Ascorbic Acid, prolonged exposure to high heat can still degrade SAP. It is best practice to add your dissolved SAP mixture to the main batch only after the temperature has dropped below 40°C (104°F).

3. The pH Requirement (Crucial Step)

SAP is unique because it requires a near-neutral environment. The final pH of your formulation must be between 6.0 and 7.0.

If the pH drops below 6.0, the SAP can precipitate out of the solution, turning your clear serum cloudy or causing a gritty texture in your creams.

4. Ingredient Synergy and Conflicts

The Niacinamide Synergy: SAP pairs beautifully with niacinamide. Because both ingredients are water-soluble and remain highly stable at a pH of 6.0, they can easily be combined in the same cool-down phase to create a potent brightening and barrier-repairing serum.

The Salicylic Acid Conflict: Take special care if you are attempting to combine SAP with chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid. Salicylic acid requires an acidic environment (a pH of around 3.0 to 4.0) to be an effective keratolytic agent. This low pH will immediately destabilize the SAP. If utilizing both, they are best kept in completely separate formulations.

5. Formulator Pro-Tips

Chelating Agents: SAP contains sodium, which can sometimes interact with trace metal ions in your water or equipment, leading to a slow breakdown of the product over time. Always include a chelating agent (like 0.1% Disodium EDTA) in your heated water phase to bind these ions and protect the SAP.

Viscosity Adjustments: SAP is a salt. When added to water-based serums containing polymeric thickeners (like Carbomer or certain synthetic gums), it can cause the viscosity to drop, resulting in a runny serum. Xanthan gum or hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) are generally more salt-tolerant thickeners to use in SAP formulations.
