Zinc PCA (Zinc Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid) is a powerful and versatile ingredient derived from the combination of zinc and L-PCA, a naturally occurring amino acid. Known for its remarkable benefits in skin and hair care, Zinc PCA is a must-have for those targeting oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin.
INCI Name: Zinc PCA
Appearance: Fine, white to off-white powder
Solubility: Water-soluble
Recommended Usage Rate: Typically 0.1% to 2% in formulations. For emulsions, the recommended usage is up to 0.3%, while for shampoos, tonics, and deodorants, it can range from 0.5% to 1.0%.
pH Stability: Most stable within a pH range of 4.0 to 6.0.
Processing: Can be added to the water phase of a formulation at a temperature of up to 50-60°C to help it dissolve faster. It is insensitive to temperature and can be processed in both hot and cold phases.
Sebum Regulation: Zinc PCA is highly effective at controlling excess oil production by inhibiting the activity of 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that contributes to sebum overproduction. This helps to reduce shine and create a more matte, balanced complexion.
Anti-Acne Properties: With its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, Zinc PCA helps to combat acne by limiting the proliferation of acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes). It also soothes redness and inflammation, promoting a clearer and healthier-looking skin.
Skin Conditioning and Hydration: L-PCA acts as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) that helps the skin retain moisture and maintain its natural barrier. This ensures the skin stays hydrated without feeling greasy.
Anti-Aging Effects: Research suggests that Zinc PCA may also have anti-aging benefits, such as promoting collagen synthesis and protecting the skin from damage caused by free radicals.
Zinc PCA is primarily used in products designed to address concerns related to oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. It is also found in hair care products. Some examples include:
Serums,Moisturizers,Masks,Toners,Shampoos,Deodorants.
Overall recommended range: 0.1% to 2%
Emulsions (creams, lotions): up to 0.3%
Shampoos and wash gels: 0.2% to 0.5%
Facial tonics, hair lotions, and deodorants: 0.5% to 1.0%
